Billy Joel: My Life / Client: Long Island Music Hall of Fame
My Life chronicles more than fifty years of the Grammy Award-winning artist’s journey, from his early days on Long Island to his legendary residency at Madison Square Garden. Developed with Joel’s support, the exhibit brings together an extraordinary collection of cherished memorabilia, behind-the-scenes videos, awards, rare audio and video recordings, instruments, and historic photographs. Many of these items, donated by Joel himself, are being displayed publicly for the first time, offering fans an intimate glimpse into the life and career of a music icon.
The exhibition opens with the moment that started it all — the Beatles performing on The Ed Sullivan Show.
“That one performance changed my life, up to that moment, I’d never considered playing rock as a career. And when I saw four guys who didn’t look like they’d come out of the Hollywood star mill, who played their own songs and instruments, and especially because you could see this look in John Lennon’s face – and he looked like he was always saying: ‘F*** you!’ — I said: ‘I know these guys, I can relate to these guys, I am these guys.’ This is what I’m going to do — play in a rock band’.” – Billy Joel
In the center of the exhibition hall is a spinning platform with Billy Joel’s grand piano. Behind the piano is a 15 foot tall semi-circle wall with projections of concert performances.
